About Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT)

Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) is an evidence-based approach that helps individuals improve their ability to understand and interpret their own and others' mental states.

It is particularly effective for borderline personality disorder, emotional dysregulation, and interpersonal difficulties. MBT focuses on enhancing self-awareness, emotional regulation, and secure attachment through structured therapeutic interventions

What will I learn?

  • Define mentalization and its role in emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships.
  • Explain mentalization as a developmental milestone, emerging through early attachment relationships.
  • Describe the key principles of MBT, including curiosity,      not-knowing stance, and affect regulation.
  • Identify and apply basic MBT techniques, such as validating      mental states and fostering reflective functioning.
  • Recognize common mentalization failures and how to address them      therapeutically.
  • Demonstrate basic skills in enhancing mentalization within      therapeutic interactions.
  • Outline the typical structure of MBT sessions, including      individual and group formats.
  • Recognize the role of the therapist in maintaining a      mentalizing stance.
